City council voted down a notice of motion to study the merits of imposing a pet limit on Calgarians Tuesday evening.

Following the seizure of 33 dogs living in filthy conditions last month, Ward 13 Coun. Diane Colley-Urquhart had initially submitted a notice of motion asking for changes to the Responsible Pet Ownership bylaw. She conducted an online poll about the idea which resulted in about 75 per cent opposition from respondents, and decided to revise the motion and ask for a study on household pet limits instead.

“Our job is to make sure we’re regulating the right things,” Colley-Urquhart said. I don’t know what the answer is at this point. I think we need to find more of those answers.”

Councillors Brian Pincott, Andre Chabot and Peter Demong questioned whether a pet limit would be the best way to address problems of animal abuse and neglect.

“It seems to be targeting the pets as opposed to the people,” said Pincott, who said the city has “work to do” around education and responsible pet ownership.

“The issue is not with the pets,” he said.

Tuesday’s vote on the revised notice of motion ended in a tie, which results in a loss.
