Calgary’s elected officials spent hours Monday behind closed doors going over resumes and appointing citizens to various boards and committees during council’s annual organizational meeting.
The last organizational meeting before the 2017 municipal election also saw minor shakeups to which councillors sit on four different standing policy committees, or SPCs – changes that are effective come January.
Each committee meets monthly and consists of seven councillors, with one as chair and a second as vice-chair.
At Monday’s meeting, it was decided the SPC on Community and Protective Services will soon be chaired by Ward 9 Coun. Gian-Carlo Carra, with Ward 6 Coun. Richard Pootmans as vice-chair.
The SPC on Planning and Urban Development will continue to be chaired by Ward 10 Coun. Andre Chabot, with Ward 2 Coun. Joe Magliocca as the new vice-chair.
Ward 12 Coun. Shane Keating will remain the chair of the SPC on Transportation and Transit, while Ward 8 Coun. Evan Woolley will step into the role of vice-chair.
The SPC on Utilities and Corporate Services will continue to be chaired by Ward 14 Coun. Peter Demong with Ward 1 Coun. Ward Sutherland as the new vice-chair.
